“Mads, where have you been?” Elizabeth questioned, hands planted firmly on hips. “You took so long, we already built the snowman.” She pointed to a large, lumpy mound of snow, approximately three feet high.

“But you’re here in time to decorate,” Lacey added.

“Sorry,” I murmured. I passed them their coffees. “I got a little held up. Jesse was in the breakfast room and he’s completely exhausted. We hung out and talked for a bit, and then he kissed me. He’s really trying to convince Jeremiah not to sell the lodge. I hope for his sake, he succeeds.”

Lacey gaped, mouth open and wide-eyed. “What did you just say?”

“I saw Jesse. He’s tired. He’s worried about his dad selling the lodge.”

Lacey’s face fell. “Didn’t you say he kissed you? I swear I heard those words come out of your mouth. Or did I just imagine it?”

“Oh that,” I flipped my wrist dismissively. “Yeah. He did.” I broke out into a huge grin. “Jesse kissed me. It wasn’t the passionate, earth-shattering kiss I’ve been dreaming about but it was a kiss. Finally!”

“How are Blitzen’s Vixens doing on the leaderboard?” Luke asked as he tilted his head to check out the shapeless heap of snow dressed in sunglasses and lingerie, mounded in front of Elizabeth.

Lacey gave him a thumbs down. “We’re not even in the top ten. How about you?”

He stroked his ginger beard absently and gave her a hangdog smile. “We’re not even entered. But Riley’s having fun and that’s what counts.”

“Where is your little mini-me?” I scoured the surrounding area and was rewarded with the sight of a very weary looking Jesse approaching, the small child tossed up, over his shoulder. “Ah, there he is.”

Luke reached out for his son when Jesse got close enough but instead of taking him, he stuck his hands up, under his jacket and tickled the child, sending him into a fit of squirmy laughter. Jesse let him wriggle and slide down over his body to a standing position.

“Hello Madison,” Jesse said, moving to stand beside me. He snaked one arm around my waist, then gave a tug and moved me a foot over, to stand directly in front of him. Gently pulling me back against himself, he wrapped his other arm around me and gave me a little squeeze. He rested his chin on top of my head. “How’s your afternoon going?”

“Pretty good,” I replied, my hands settling over his. “But better now that you’re here.”

In the distance a loudspeaker squawked and squealed then pinged a couple times followed by a loud thud.

“Dad must be getting ready to announce the winners.”

While we watched, Jeremiah weaved his way through the crowd of snowman makers and made his way over to the landing at the top of the lodge’s front stairs, megaphone in hand. He waved then put the speaker to his mouth. “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, on behalf of myself and my son, Jesse, we want to thank you all for coming out to have fun with us in the eighteenth annual Blue Spruce Lodge winter competition day.
